Batch Farm Cheesemakers Ltd is situated on a picturesque Pennard ridge with views of the Glastonbury Tor and the Mendips. The Goulds have farmed here for 70 years and the cheesemaking has been a family concern for the last 40. The dairy is adjacent to the thatched farmhouse where Fred and Jean run the farm and cheesemaking business with the help of their head cheesemaker Richard Honeybun and Jean’s son John, who runs the farm shop and does most of the packing.
The Goulds bring the milk from their 260 Friesian cows about ¾ of a mile to the dairy each day. Their cows drink the whey that is left over from the cheesemaking process. This gives them a lovely coat - a good coat means a healthy cow and a healthy cow produces better milk and better cheese. All their wonderful milk goes into making about 150 rounds each week, each of which is pressed for a full two days before the Goulds wrap and lard them.
EFJ Gould & Co recently opened a farm shop next to the dairy and find it lovely to have people drop by to pick up a wedge of real Cheddar and see where it’s made.
EFJ Gould’s cheese is available in Tesco, Marks and Spencer and the Co-Op. Cheeses are also sold locally at a number of stores and as well as their own farm shop.
Traditional Farmhouse Cheddar
Cheddar is the world's favourite cheese and Britain can boast an unmatched Cheddar-making heritage. This Traditional Farmhouse Cheddar is handmade using pasteurised milk. Matured for over 18 months it has a firm texture with a deliciously savoury and nutty flavour that lingers sumptuously in the mouth and on the mind. It finds the perfect companion in strong dry cider.
